New Dry Stone Walling
The art and beauty of dry stone walling
Working with you to plan and design your ideal Dry Stone Wall. This could be a garden feature, a boundary wall, a seating area or a beautiful dry stone focal point for your home which you and future generations can enjoy.
Rebuilding Dry Stone Walls
Rebuilding walls with strength and integrity
Standing for 100's of years Dry Stone Walls are both practical and beautiful. With minimal care a dry stone wall will long outlast a wall built with mortar. All walls can however be compromised by the close proximity of tree roots or by plants such as ivy which expand inside the wall and push out the stone, thus affecting the safety and structure. Stone can also be affected by water ingress and frost damage. Weakening the stone strength and the wall structure.
Repairing Dry Stone Walls
Making safe
A full rebuild may not always be required. Where a small part of a dry stone wall has fallen we can make safe and repair, tieing into the current wall. In the above picture we were called by the Warden of a church in Lincolnshire who wished to make the wall safe and to mitigate further damage.
Preventative care and management
Ivy and tree roots
Following these 3 simple steps will ensure that your dry stone wall stays strong and safe for you and future generations.
1. Where possible do not allow trees to grow within 2 meters of the wall. The roots of trees too close to the wall will eventually compromise the wall and lead to a full or partial collapse. Where tree growth close to a wall is unavoidable we bridge the roots with space to grow and move under the wall.
2. Remove ivy and other plant roots from the wall. If a wall is covered in ivy it is best to cut at the base and leave to die before carefully removing. Pulling on ivy which has been growing on a wall for a number of years can sometimes lead to the wall collapse. Check regularly for ivy and/or plant growth in the wall and remove when still young.
3. Consider weak points in your wall and keep a watching brief. Whilst very long lasting all natural stone walls walls will deteriorate in time. Walls built 100's of years ago may be showing signs of frost damage to the stone. There may be parts of the wall which are bulging or long cracks which need to be kept an eye on. A wall which looks as though it may collapse at any time should be fenced off, carefully taken down and rebuilt.
